The work is becoming more regular again but I fear with this study today that we have used rather too much of the precious winton but no matter as it was a holo deck perfect scene today1 and the tube just could not be spared. The view shows the same angle that we have often taken looking across the field to the road with the little yellow house on the right with a cupping of trees behind but we have never taken it in the snow. We had in mind the coloured shadows which we read about in the Rewald2 but we also increased the hue of the snow in the yellow direction for contrast. It was dog cold and bright but we wrapped up warm and were able to remain in position for two hours on this one.
Time is indeed on our side a little more and will perhaps be for several weeks on account of my daughter doing herself, her left ankle to be specific, a mischief;3 jumping down from the top of a snö berg4 in the car park in front of my mother's apartment she landed funny and fractured her ankle! This berg is just what is ploughed in the process of clearing the car park and you see them everywhere. They appear to be a child's delight and I always wondered why there are rarely children playing on them. My ones played and jumped happily for twenty minutes, scrambling up and jumping down but unfortunately I was unable to comprehend the simple cause and effect physics unfolding before us until that is my daughter landed and shot me a look of surprised pain. Instantly I realised that with each jump back into the same cavernous boot holes the children took the more compact the snow was becoming, until it was hard enough to do what it did. The angle, slipperiness and the fact that her foot had nowhere to slide to, being about a size twenty deep, all came in to play and we spent the rest of the day at akuten.5
She handled the situation very well I must say despite being in pain. We were all very proud of her and once again we felt that sense of deep, bordering on hysterical, gratitude to the doctors and nurses and for the fact that we have a society at all! Sometimes everyone needs help and today it was us and you know it seems that the worst of the political culture wars that plague us do not take place here. They are for the fit and healthy somehow. The energetic, the gleeful, for tribal camaraderie, for relishing the fight, a Friday night and all is well sense that surrounds the world of trolls stomping around the virtual society. As we waited for our daughter to emerge from X-rays we realised just how contained that part of life on the internet is, the world of alt right bait and sneer but also the world of the leftist critique and cynicism. It seemed they had no purchase on us as we waited for the doctors assessment, they cannot escape their own small sphere or at the very least we can say that the moment something really happens in ones actual life the abstractions which just moments before consumed us vanish in a puff helplessness.
Granted these occasions are as rare as an Irish nazi6 and indeed we speak of ourselves when we talk like this. In the mess of the post truth era can we understand that the political manipulation afforded by the culture wars game of bait, outrage and cancel are very much a button one can press, a dial to be turned? In other words something that is just a tool or game?
A handshake,
John
